In my first year of studying composition at conservatory, I was presented with large book of Hungarian melodies, compiled by famed composer Béla Bartók, who, alongside countryman Zoltán Kodály collected hundreds and hundreds of folk melodies from their native country.
I was presented with the challenge to write short piano pieces based on some of these melodies, but twisting and turning them, reharmonizing them, and shifting their inherent rhythmic and timbral qualities into something hopefully fresh and new.
I chose melodies, numbered one, two, four and eight, in the edition that was presented to me, and got to work. Though these were written quite a long time ago, I still look back on them fondly because of at what time in my life and career these were written.
