Messiaen, one of the giants of the 20th century has always been one of my favorite composers for his timbral colours and his textural invention. A true wizard of the orchestra. A few years ago when I was studying his famed “modes of limited transposition” it got me interested in writing a series of short studies with these modes, to figure them out more and internalize their logic.
It was quite an intensive process, but one that taught me invaluable insights into the mind of one of the world’s finest composers. Most of these short studies I ended up discarding afterwards, but this one, based on Messiaen’s second mode; the much-used octatonic, or diminished scale, I liked so much I decided to keep it for publication.

Wonderful. To begin with, I love how the instruments sound and blend together. Then, the music is imaginative and rich in harmony as well as melody and atmosphere.
Gorgeous impressionistic and colourful writing. Makes the chamber ensemble sound like an orchestra. Again, a clear structure and thematic logic.
